The Age of Growth and Progress: Ushering in The James Dy era (1991 to the present)

As we inch our way to the current situation, we highlight in this article the vast accomplishments and contributions of the hospital’s current leader and guiding light, Dr. James G. Dy. Through his efforts, he has led the expansion of every single hospital department, the modernization and updating of its medical equipment and overseeing the creation of the Cancer and Heart institutes, in particular. And as we finally make our way to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we showcase why and how CGHMC has continued to persevere despite all these challenges.

In 1988, Dr. James Go Dy assumed the Presidency of the Philippine Chinese Charitable Association, Inc., the organization that handles the Chinese General Hospital, the Chinese Cemetery and other affiliated organizations and he continued the expansions and improvements with more vigor.

According to Morallos, Dr. Dy paid “special attention to streamlining and making the management system more efficient, effective and responsive to the need for quality medical services to the general public.”

The Heart Institute was established in 1996 with the Dr. Dy Bun Yok and Dr. Manuel Chuachiaco utilizing the very latest cardiac medical and surgical equipment at that time. Subsequently, the Radiology Department received seven new machines and the Hemodialysis unit acquired 20 new dialysis machines.

In 1990, the CGH Medical Staff Association, Inc. was established with Dr. Carlos Lu as its  founding President and Dr. James G. Dy as its Founding Adviser, and who still is up to the present.

The CGH MSA was conceived as a vehicle for the consultants’ interaction, civic participation and coordination and crucial in aiding in the advancement of the CGHMC’s Mission and Vision

Pursuing the need to accommodate and improve more services, a new building, dubbed the MRI building was constructed in 1998 that presently houses the Cancer Institute with its new Linear Accelerator, the third-party MRI facility with its latest machine, patients’ rooms and the CGH Medical Staff Association Office on the 9th floor.

Foreseeing the influx of the various sub-specialty physicians and the need to provide clinics and services for more patients, in December of 2009, the 10-storey Medical Arts Building was completed. This was erected on the original site of the first clinic-hut of the hospital and the post-war hospital buildings. This building houses the Diabetic Foot and Wound Care Clinic with its Bariatric Machine, the Administrative Offices, 4 levels of parking spaces, and commercial establishments on the ground floor. The CGHMC Colleges Building College of Medicine and allied medical courses was constructed and in 2017, it opened its doors to its very first Medical School Students. A CHGMC Dormitory is being built beside the College of Nursing Building ( 1975) on the A. Maceda Street side.
