Department of Radiation Oncology

2D Conventional Radiation Therapy – uses parallel and opposing beams of radiation with no beam modulation. This is usually utilized for bone metastases or whole brain radiation therapy.

3D CRT – 3D Conformal Radiation Therapy – utilizes imaging such as CT-scan to create 3Dimensional images of the tumor and normal organs thereby allowing more accurate targeting especially of irregular tumors and avoiding normal structures. Higher doses of radiation can thus be delivered to the tumor and at the same time sparing normal structures.

IMRT – Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy – this is a more advanced form of radiation therapy. It utilizes many radiation beams called beamlets that vary the dose intensity. This can lead to dose escalation for the tumor and minimizing the dose to the nearby normal organs.

IGRT – Image Guided Radiation Therapy – utilizes frequent imaging via a Cone Beam CT Scan attached to the TruBeam Linear Accelerator during the course of radiation therapy. This ensures accurate positioning and targeting of the tumor and comparing to the pre-treatment images. The use of IGRT is usually combined with IMRT.

VMAT – Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy – is a highly advanced type of radiation therapy that utilizes Image Guidance and Intensity Modulation to deliver the radiation in one or several arcs or rotations around the target. It utilizes higher dose rates and faster gantry speeds that results in a shorter treatment time. The radiation dose is more concentrated on the target with minimal doses to the surrounding structures and lesser side effects.

Hypofractionated Radiation Therapy – uses larger fractional doses than conventional radiation therapy which results in an over-all shorter course of radiation treatment. It is usually combined with the advanced RT techniques such as IMRT or VMAT as well as Image Guidance.

CT-Scan Planning – all patients undergo CT-scan Planning which is located inside the RT department. Planning system is capable of MRI and PET Ct-scan fusion for an accurate target delineation.
