CGHMC Opens a New Breast Center: A One-Stop Shop for Breast Care

The Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center (CGHMC) recently inaugurated a new center of excellence for women. To mark the occasion, a symposium on breast cancer was held in the morning at the auditorium, followed by the ribbon-cutting and the blessing of the center.

In his video message, President and CEO Mr. Kelly Sia congratulated Medical Director Dr. Samuel Ang and the rest of the surgical and breast surgeons for making the Breast Center possible. The new specialized center is a patient-centered, multidisciplinary facility that provides state-of-the-art diagnostic and screening tools, modern facilities, and up-to- date surgical procedures.

“It is a one-stop shop,” said Mr. Sia, “offering a full spectrum of breast care—from a routine check-up, consultation with breast specialists, imaging tests to surgery, providing patients with optimum care every step of the way.”

The highlight of the symposium was the broadcast of three live surgeries from the operating room performed by a guest surgeon from Singapore, Dr. Ong Kong Wee. Dr. Ong is the founding head of SingHealth Duke-NUS Breast Centre, the largest specialty center treating breast conditions. Currently, he is the Medical Director of Concord International Hospital and runs his own practice at K.W. Ong Breast and General Clinic. Dr. Sammy Cunanan, Assistant Chairman of CGHMC Department of Surgery and Head of Minimally Invasive Surgery, Dr. Remi Karis Velasco, Member, Training Committee of CGHMC Department of Surgery, and Dr. Joyce Chua, the Head of the CGHMC Breast Center, were among the members of the operating room team who assisted in the live mastectomies with sentinel lymph node biopsy using indocyanine green and blue dye, endoscopic mastectomy, and vacuum-assisted biopsy.

CGHMC is distinguished as one of the few hospitals in the country that offers advanced diagnostic techniques such as radioisotope, indocyanine green and blue dye for breast surgeries. Moreover, CGHMC’s Breast unit continues to provide cutting-edge surgical procedures for breast cancer, such as robotic or endoscopic mastectomy followed by single-stage reconstruction.

The Breast Center is staffed by a highly competent team composed of specialized surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, and nurses.
