The CGHMC Section of Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy Unit, in collaboration with the University of Santo Tomas Hospital (USTH) and Metropolitan Hospital, held a workshop entitled \u201cDECODING BLACK, GRAYS, AND WHITE: A BASIC EUS WORKSHOP\u201d last March 11, 2025, at CGHMC. The workshop was endorsed by the Asian EUS Group (AEG), the Philippine Society of Gastroenterology (PSG), and the Philippine Society of Digestive Endoscopy (PSDE). The aim of this activity was to promote and enhance the expertise of Filipino gastroenterologists in Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) by providing an invaluable refresher course on the fundamentals of EUS procedures. The workshop was strategically held within the Philippine Digestive Health Week and a day before the Joint Annual Convention of PSG and PSDE, serving as the perfect kickoff to the large event.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The one-day workshop was attended by gastroenterology fellows, consultants, and trainees from across the Philippines who were eager to refine their skills and knowledge in EUS techniques. A key highlight of the workshop was the participation of Professor Ichiro Yasuda, a distinguished guest speaker from Japan, recognized worldwide for his expertise in ERCP and EUS. Professor Yasuda, who is the Professor and Chairman of the Third Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Toyama, Japan, has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers, with a focus on EUS- and ERCP-related procedures. He also serves as the President of the Japan Biliary Association and a Director of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society. His leadership extends to being an Auditor for the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology and a councilor for the Asian-Pacific Society for Digestive Endoscopy.<\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The primary goals of the workshop were to refresh the skills of Filipino gastroenterology trainers and professionals in basic EUS techniques and to teach effective methods for passing these skills on to trainees. The course included lectures on a refresher of basic radial and linear EUS anatomy, needle tricks on how to increase EUS Fine Needle Biopsy (EUS-FNB) tissue yield, and advances in the clinical utility of EUS.<\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

There was also a live demonstration of four cases, allowing attendees to observe real-time EUS procedures performed by Professor Yasuda and other expert instructors. The workshop also included case discussions, which provided participants with the opportunity to delve deeper into the complexities of each case and learn from experienced specialists. Additionally, hands-on learning stations were set up, giving participants the chance to practice their skills in a controlled environment and receive valuable feedback from the experts.<\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The workshop was organized by Dr. Jonard Co, the head of the CGHMC Section of Gastroenterology, as the course director, with Dr. Frederick Dy, Dr. Evan Ong, and Dr. Bryan Christopher Lao serving as co-course directors. Together, they ensured the program provided a comprehensive platform for Filipino endoscopists to enhance their abilities, ensuring they were well-equipped to perform advanced diagnostic procedures. Other faculty members included Drs. Manley Uy, Michael Louie Lim, and Justin Ryan Tan, who facilitated the hands-on demonstrations and case discussions.<\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
